BOOK REVIEW: JODI PICOULT'S VANISHING ACTS

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

I am in a Jodi Picoult phase right now. My sister and I are crazy about her novels. I believe she is pure genius, breaking boundaries and writing about controversial topics in a very empathic and touching voice. I also vowed I should stop reading her books because some topics could be a bit depressing and heartbreaking. But I couldn't seem to stay away from borrowing more of her books.

Vanishing Acts is the second novel I read of Jodi Picoult after blowing me away with the "The Storyteller". Vanishing Acts' storyline remind me of that acclaimed Filipino film starring Claudine Baretto, Diether Ocampo and Jericho Rosales, "Nasaan Ka Man. Three friends growing up together and both guys falling in love with the girl. Of course, the girl falls in love with only one of them. But no, not one of them is a killer nor the other a bad guy unlike the Filipino movie. It is also more about a story of a love of a parent and the measures he/she will do for the love of his/her child. *Spoiler Alert. Delia, the protagonist, learned only that she was kidnapped at a very young age by her dad when police came to their house to arrest her father. Now, she has to ask her fiancé (one of her childhood friend) to be the lawyer to defend her dad in court. Delia, who is a mother herself, struggles with this new revelation in her life. What if her child was taken by her child's father too, away from her? Would she've done the same thing if she was in his dad's position?

In the novel, you realise the special bond that God had created for a child and parent. It is precious, extraordinary and blessing.  It is a blessing that comes with tremendous sacrifices and selfless acts to testify your love for God's gift to you. Reading this, I salute all parents and my parents especially. Our parents will always have our best interest at heart. They will do anything to give us a better future and protect us from harm even if it means sacrificing their own life, their career, their freedom...

Book Club points for discussion:

1. Who would you want Delia to end up with? Eric or Fitz and why?

2. Would you've done the same thing that Delia's dad did for her?

3. Which celebrity actress you think should best play Delia?

HONEYMOON IN THREE COUNTRIES

Monday, June 24, 2013

J and I were psyched for our honeymoon trip. We both love to travel and it was our first time to travel together abroad. We decided to have our honeymoon in three places: HONGKONG, MACAU and SINGAPORE.

HONGKONG

We are a total geeks. We spent out honeymoon in a Science Museum, hehe. We also did a lot of crazy poses at the Avenue for the Stars and hang out for a bit of fresh air at Victoria Harbor.

We did a bit of window night shopping at Temple Street and Mongkok Market. We sampled the HongKong cuisine. Some we like, some we will never try again, ever, hahaha!

We went to Central and rode the tram to The Peak. We love it there. We also visited the Madame Taussauds' Wax Museum. We had so much fun there. I am so happy to be sitting beside my idol, Audrey Hepburn, even if she was just made up of wax, hehe.

Of course, even with a limited time, we dropped by Disneyland. Too bad, our flight was on the same day we went to Disney so we hurried to the airport and we weren't able to catch the fireworks. We will be back, HongKong Disneyland! We promise!

MACAU

Macau is just a ferry-ride away from HongKong. J and I visited this Asian mini-Las Vegas even on a rainy day.

Visiting and exploring the different casinos and hotels in Macau was cool. We get to transfer from one casino to another with the free shuttle buses of the hotel, not to mention free mineral waters in every hotel. People in Macau gives  away a lot of free stuff, hehe. Our favourite casinos are Venetian, the new Galaxy and The City of Dreams with their digital mermaids swimming about.

We give the Macau food with its Portuguese influence a four-thumbs up. We love their food. We love their egg tarts, their bakwa and other yummy dishes. If only we can bring a box load of egg tarts and it won't get spoiled.

Getting to know the history and culture of Macau, one must definitely visit Senado Square, The Ruins and The Mount Fortress. I love visiting these spots because it is what made me fell in love with Macau before, and of course the area near the ruins where vendors would shove free bakwa on our faces. Hahaha! I love it!

SINGAPORE

The last leg of our Asian honeymoon was in Singapore. My hubby was accompanying me back to the place where I am currently residing because of work. It was nice to walk the streets and the places I know in Singapore having him beside me.

Singapore is a shopping city, so many malls and all the signature brands are crawling in this city. We took a stroll in the busy shopping center of Singapore: Orchard. I also made J try my fave Singaporean foods: chicken rice, prawn mee,, bbq chicken wings, etc.

By nightfall, we went to Marina Bay to see the wonderful lights that illuminates this Lion City. We also caught a bit of the nightly water fountain show on the decks of Marina Bay Sands.

Last but not the least, we have to experience the Universal Studios together. And it was awesomely-great! It was amazing to be trying all the rides, scary or not scary, with someone beside you who you know will be there for you in times when it may be scary in life or not. We had a jolly good time.

I find the Mummy ride still scary but since I am with J so I didn't mind. But we both find the Cylon roller coaster to be kick-ass! One more time? Yeah!

Can't wait for more travel adventures with my hubby.... :)

WEDDING SUPPLIER: PIHO PRODUCTIONS

Saturday, June 22, 2013

J and I initially have decided we don't want our wedding to be held in a hotel. In search for that 'non-hotel' wedding venue, we found the previously known as Wilfredo's Garden now reintroduced as Sheridan Boutique Resort to be the place for our wedding reception. Then the next step was to look for an event stylist to decorate the reception venue. J's supervisor has friends who does events planning and we decided to give it a try. We met up with these cool people who are behind Piho Productions. I gave them pictures of my inspirations for the wedding reception: a lamps, the couples nook and floating lanterns. Ice, the only lady of this talented trio, totally get me by saying, "Ah, shabby chic!" Yeah! That is totally want I was going for. From there, they bounce back with cool original ideas all on their own. I find creativity, personalised touches and simplicity better than expensive flowers, over-the-top lightings and breakable chandeliers.  It was fun working with them. They understand their clients and they also empathic & adjust to the clients' budget. Not only are these guys original and cool, they are also very professional and organised. Some wedding suppliers or business people should learn from these guys in how to deal with clients because they convey to their client clearly from their plans, execution and provide itemized details of materials & prices. The clients in turn will appreciate this so much.

During the wedding day, the set was just what we wanted: laid-back, quirky & so shabby-chic!

Outside the pavilion, a take-you-own-picture photo booth was set up with a big picture frame with strings of pictures of J & me hanging on it. It was my own  pink camera & tripod that was set up on the nook. The guest can take their own pictures using the self-timer with their messages on chalkboards provided. It is like our own remembrance from our guests.

Inside the reception area, there is a candy/chocolate corner, an open-bar that serves only green or blue cocktails arranged by my brother Ras and a yummy buffet catered by Mr. Wilson Esperancilla.

Piho Productions decorated the pavilion inside just as pretty as the outside. So many artsy crafts for guests to entertain themselves, pretty chalk board table numbers, large paper lanterns on the ceiling and hanging tea candles on the large tree.

Guests gets to write down messages for us and hang it on the twigs on their tables. As you could see, our friends got some weird sense of humor but we get it, hehe....

Thank you Piho Productions! You guys are awesome! Next time naman? Maybe for our baby's baptismal party? :) Best of luck!

MAKEUP MAGIC OF NORVIC TOTANES

Thursday, June 20, 2013

They say the bride is in her prettiest during her wedding day because she naturally glows. I believe that "natural glow" has  a lot to do with a fantastic make-up artist sorcery. Makeup Artists today are modern-day magicians. Days before my wedding, my skin was acting up again which resulted in dry patches and blemishes. I had also dark circles around my eyes because I keep staying up late up chatting with my family. But my makeup artist made those magically disappear on my wedding day. Looking for a makeup artist for wedding day is a challenging task. Of course you want to look your best on your special day. Who  doesn't, right? My close friend in high school in Saudi Arabia recommended Norvic Totanes. I did a makeup trial with her in Manila and I absolutely love the results. She uses the best makeup brands & tools and is a whiz with an airbrush. She has done makeup for Daphne Osena, Divine Lee and Maricar Reyes. I told her what I want for my wedding day is a makeup that is 'just me'. I don't want to look overdone nor do I want any drastic makeup transformation. And on my wedding day, I was very happy with the result of my makeup. I did two looks for the wedding: a messy up-do with fresh makeup with a glow and a side part do with smoking eyes & plum lips.

Not only is Norvic Totanes an amazing beautiful makeup artist, it is fun to be with her. She makes the bride feel relaxed and I enjoyed the quality time we spent with Edmarri as I relive love story of J & me. She is highly- recommended.

Thank you Ate Norvic for making me look beautiful on my wedding day. Mwah! And Thanks Edz for introducing me to your Ate Norvic....

THE BRIDE AND GROOM

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

I personally prefer grooms to wear tuxedos and was happy to know that J also prefers a tux than the traditional barong. The next step was "where" to find a suit of J. We were hoping to look for a good quality ready-made suit. Feeling that our options were limited in Iloilo, we looked for suits in Manila. Every shops J would checked out would make any regular worn-out wallet cry. 80,000?? Really? Until he stumbled into this shop in Glorietta, MERGER, that makes customized suits for men. It is even promoted by model, Victor Basa in his blog. We ordered a suit in MERGER in a price even lesser than our projected budget. It was such a steal! They measured J and discussed with him what kind of design he wants. Then they added their suggestions based on their expertise. They send the measurements to China where the suits are made. When it is done, it will be shipped back in Manila. Several fittings are done in a case there are revisions. MERGER did a great job in making my husband look hot, hot, hot!

Ok so this wasn't original. This inspiration was taken from Veejay Floresca's designed tuxedo for blogger, Patty Laurel's husband on their wedding. This patch was sewn in J right breast pocket of the suit by his mom.

As for me, it was hard for me to think of what kind of gown would befitting for a diminutive gal like me. I was tossing back and forth if I should have my gown long or short. I wanted to feel like a Disney princess with that white long gown though I could easily pass off as Tinkerbell or the green fairy in Moulin Rouge than a real long slim princess. So the option of a short gown is playing into my mind to fit my vertically-challenged deficiency. But I know what I don't want in my gown is that I don't want too much 'burloloy' on my gown. No need for bling-blings or god-forbid, sequins. I also know that I dont want the traditional viel on my face. My poor vision is already aided by a high-degree contact lenses, I wouldn't want to feel like I missed out of my wedding because half of the time I have a blurry vision of my own wedding and half of the time , I am struggling from the humidity of a lacey materiel on the nose and mouth. I wanted a bird cage veil for easier breathing, bigger holes to witness my wedding and for that modern-vintage feel that I wanted for our wedding.

There were so many talented bridal designers in Iloilo, some of which are my friends and acquaintances. It was hard to choose. But J's supervisor mentioned   to us Claire Jarantilla, one of the best couturier in Iloilo, who did her wedding gown also. So we arranged a meeting with her. In our first meeting, J and I know we have find the designer for my bridal gown. She listened to what kind of gown I was going for, she was attentive to what inspires me and she gave her creative spin of I wanted for my gown. She was so pleasant to talk to and it was a joy to have her make my bridal gown. She also solved my dilemma of the long-or-short gown and she said, "Lets do both!" I  got a transformer gown! Weee! I wore my long gown during the ceremony and it transforms into a short mullet gown during reception time.  My friend were surprised how it became short during reception program without me changing gowns. She also made my lovely bird cage. It was so me! i love it! I matched my pretty gown with a bright green Charles & Keith stilletos.

WEDDING SUPPLIERS: WES COORDINATORS

Monday, June 17, 2013

I know I have picked a very stressful job. Being a doctor is not easy, not until I discovered another job that is equally, if not more stressful than my job: being a wedding coordinator. The thought of being a wedding coordinator seems like a cute job: you picture J.Lo in the movie, "The Wedding Planner' and you say I got this in the bag. But it is not as easy as it looks. Believe me, i saw with my own two eyes how hard it is to be wedding coordinators. I realized what a blessing it is for the bride and groom to have their own experienced wedding coordinators than just their own very efficient relative to take care of the details. If I would give a gift to the a friend of my mine who will be getting married, I would give her wedding coordinators. It will make hers and her fiance's life way easier. There as so many last minutes details before the wedding that anyone can miss out and your wedding coordinators can point out to you or remind you. Wedding coordinators  absorbs the stress  of the bride and groom. If I were a wedding coordinator and doing 5 weddings a month, I will be nervous wreck. I don't know how they able to do it. I am amazed.

I met Sheryl, our wedding coordinator, before through a mutual friend in a party. We hit it off instantly and when J and I started preparing, she was the first one who came to mind. I guess things really happen for a reason. Wedding & Events Specialists or simply WES Coordinators are team heading by She and Jocelyn. Don't let these baby faces fool you because this group know what they are doing. J and I booked them to be our wedding coordinators a year before our wedding. We got the on-the-day coordination package. They are very experienced and has coordinated & planned many successful weddings. They also do wedding & events planning as far as here in Singapore. They are efficient, organised and very knowledgeable about weddings. They thought us about symbolisms in the  wedding ceremony and reception program. They thought me to put my bouquet in front my (excuse me for staying this, haha) crotch. They say, "Flower over flower", haha, because it will look got in photos. Even our photographer said the same thing, haha. I guess, its a wedding lingo. Now I know, hehe. Our wedding started right on time and everything went smoothly. Our guests complimented how smooth and non-chaotic the flow of the wedding. They didn't realize how much work our coordinators did to keep it that way. WES Coordinators also wear such lovely uniforms. It shows how professional and serious they are with their jobs. They are polite, never bossy and always have their clients best interest. They want their client to be smiling and wrinkle-free on their special day, just as it suppose to be. They also provided us with an excellent host, a popular radio jockey who kept our reception  program lively and fun.

To Sheryl and Jocelyn and their team, thank you so much for taking good care of us. We got a drama-free, stress-free wedding that we want. WES Coordinators rock!

AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL BRIDES TO BE

Sunday, June 16, 2013

Dear Brides,

How are you all doing? Are you excited?

I know exactly how you felt when your fiances pop the question and placed the ring on your fingers (well, maybe for those fiances who bought rings, i guess). It felt surreal , dazed and sky-high.  I went home, with a silly grin my face and happy tears in my eyes. I never know how exciting and amazing it felt to be engaged. It's a nice warm feeling to have a man declaring his love for you and wanting to spend the rest of his lifetime with you. It is a big big step for any man, especially if he does it without you giving him a passive-aggressive attitude (Read: Ai-Ai Delas Alas) or (pathetic) ultimatums. I am not one of those girls who dreams of their wedding day even before they met their man. I don't spend hours surfing on bridal gowns even before the proposal. It came as a surprise to me how giddy I felt of being engaged. And I tell you girls, relish it. It is one of the wonderful surprises of life. I am so grateful that my fiance (now husband) had given me a chance to enjoy our courtship in a step-by-step fashion, no shortcuts. He proposed to me after a good amount of time of getting to know our quirks, foul moods and shortcomings. He did not rush but he didn't dwaddle either. We didn't jump into marriage either after he proposed. We had a good one year and few months to simmer into this exciting state of engagement and had a good time to prepare for our wedding. When I will have a daughter, I would wish for her the same thing. I would want her future husband to court her. I want her to enjoy the company of her boyfriend. I want that she will experience the joys of being proposed and the preparation that come afterwards. I don't want her to be cheated on that like some girls do. Unfortunately, a lot of girls had been deprived of that. Some girls would hurriedly run with their boyfriends to the next judge to get married just like that. Some girls would tell me that they wish their fiancé proposed to them with a ring and a proper proposal instead of "I guess its time we should get married now because we are of age, can you do all the necessary things to get this done?". I wish my daughter can experience the same excitement and fun of being engaged as well as all the other single women because we all deserve it.

Being both a bit of an obsessive-compulsive in varying styles and degrees, me and my husband love preparing for our wedding. Of course, it naturally comes with an occasional conflicts of choices but most often, it comes with a perfect collaboration of our wants. The preparation bonds you both as a couple and this is a trial run of the world of compromise of married life. I was lucky enough to have a hand-ons fiancé. He wasn't like other fiancee who lets the bride do all the decisions and wait on the sidelines.  It was also a challenge for us to prepare with me working abroad while he would do all the overseeing himself back in the Philippines. But we were a team and we make a perfect team together.

So here are my personal tips on preparing for your wedding of your dreams:

1.SPLURGE ON THE NON-NEGOTIABLES AND SCRIMP ON THE NEGOTIABLES

Weddings are no joke. It can cost an arm and a leg. Especially now that it has attracted many creatives and turned it into businesses. That why, I guess,  you can't also blame others who opted to elope and go to City Hall to be married off. So for you not to get buried in debt way before your marriage has even started, try to choose at least two non-negotiables to splurge on and try to seek for very talented suppliers that can give you a fee that is right for your budget. For us, our non-negotiables are our photos/videos and our catering. Photos/Videos will document this special day and will stand in as our time machine to relive the day we said 'our i-dos". We wanted one of best. Someone who is reliable and well-recommended. We chose Bordoy Viterbo. He is one of the best photographers in Panay. He is extremely popular especially in Boracay weddings. We were so happy we booked him and his team. He did an amazing job. We are very happy clients. The other non-negotiable is food. We want our guests' tummies to be satisfied and full. We chose Wilson Esperancilla, one of the best caterers in town. Me and my husband might be overwhelmed with everything around us that we weren't able to really eat properly but our guests were super-duper happy with food. It was a joy to see them coming back for more helpings. To balance some of the budget, we looked for talented suppliers that is equally good as those who have made names in the wedding business  for number of years but in our own price range. We also asked help from friends to lend in a helping hand in our preparation. My dear friend Mel designed and did all our invitations by hand. My mom and dad also volunteered to take care of souvenirs and our rings.

2. BE YOUR OWN COUPLE

Before starting the preparation, my husband and I discussed what we want for our wedding. We know who we are as a couple. We want it to be simple, laid-back, modern classic but not tacky. We were never traditional but we were never extreme rule-breaker either. We are not into lavish affairs. We don't want our wedding to shout out opulence and utmost elegance that everyone became to stiff and pretends to be so someone they are not. We are chill and bubbly. We are not vulgar or rowdy either. In a hot tropical country and people used to wearing barongs for wedding, my husband wants a tux, so we will give him his tux. Good thing, the entourage willingly oblige to his request too and they all wore tux even in our not-perfectly ventilated church. People expect brides to use the traditional veils over the bride's face and wear glittery gown and white glittery shoes. I did not. I wore a bird-cage veil and a bright green heels. We were told that reception decoration needs expensive fresh flowers that I couldn't even pronounce to exude an air of elegance and classiness but I am not into that. I am happy with a bunch of filler flowers like baby's breath to decorate our reception area and more cutesy crafts to exude a happy mood. Also  try to be creative in your programs for the receptions. Insert fun games like we did instead of long string of toasts and messages.

3. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Before committing to your suppliers, do your research. Ask your friends and  previous clients of suppliers for opinions. Referrals are the best way to get good suppliers. Remember that the referring parties should have your best interest at hand and not with ulterior motives like say, a commission. The best suppliers we got are mostly from my husband's workmates' suggestions. We were so glad we got the suppliers they recommended. Also go with your gut feeling. We know they are the right suppliers when we met up with them , we felt a relaxed feeling and we know they will take care of the details for us. We felt that with our photographer, my bridal gown designer and our event stylists. We ended the meeting with me and J being excited and looking forward to our wedding day. And truly, they didn't disappoint.

4. BE ORGANIZE AND DELEGATE

When we started preparing, I bought a wedding notebook. We jot down the suppliers we have chosen as well as we are still choosing along with their professional fees, dates of deadline of payments and our deposited payments for reservation. My husband made an excel document for us to update whenever we paid or deposited our suppliers. It helps also to reserved early. Wedding suppliers, the good ones that is, gets booked fast and they can slip through your hands if you don't book them first. Same goes to your church and reception area. I know couples who have a date in mind but failed to reserved the church they want and have to search another church last minute because of this simple mistake. Also do some research on how to get a marriage license. Prepare your birth certificates, baptismal certificates, confirmation certificates and cenomar (certificate of no marriage, usually for the groom only). Take note that these have validity dates. Also you need to a Cana seminar, publish your marriage banns for 3 consecutive Sundays in your respective parishes and have a seminar at the population office. These stage of the prep can be tricky and time-consuming. Also list down your probable guests. Each of the couple should make their own list and compromise on a number of guests. Inform your relatives and friends abroad way ahead schedule for them to prepare too for their leaves and vacation. Also delegate. My husband made me in-charge of the flowers, what to tell the florists is up to me. He took care of the transportation. For music, I chose the church music while he took care of the music for the reception. For all the other things we can't do, we asked help from my amazing cousin, Manang Sheil. My mother and her friend took care of the offertory gifts.

5. THIS IS A CELEBRATION OF LOVE, NOT A SHOW

If only I have superpowers, I wish I could fly out all my friends and families who weren't able to come to our wedding because of work and distance. I realize that it really matters that on  the most important day of both your life, you have your loved-ones  there rather than faceless strangers to make a commentary and just for the free food. That's why I understand why other people would spend plane fares to fly out their relatives and friends with them in their wedding day. Only if we were buck-load rich. *Sigh. Also while some couples get overwhelmed with preparation, they forget that this after all is about love. Some couples get so caught up with impressing other people, they lost sight that the wedding is not about other people but rather about them, celebrating their love for each other. Sometimes when I get frazzled from the wedding preparation, my husband would always remind me, "The most important thing is that we are getting married and nothing else matter". He told me that I shouldn't expect everything to be perfect on that day but it was perfect enough because we will be spending our lives together. Then I smiled. I guess this start of a marriage when someone become your strength when you get weak.

I hope these tips are useful for you. Enjoy this moment. I felt a bit sad when the preparation was coming to a close. My 'list-maker' in me was enjoying too much of ticking our to-do list in our wedding notebook until I realize that the best was yet to come after the the preparation. Have loads of fun, brideys... Its exciting to be a bride in this generation. So many options, so many new innovative ideas. Best of luck and Best Wishes.

A Happy Ex-Bride
