OUR FUNNY VALENTINE

Saturday, February 25, 2012

For Valentines Day, we thought of trying some foreign cuisine and I went ahead and made a reservation at Bavaria, a German restaurant near St. Vincent Seminary...

With almost all restaurants in the city full and people waiting to be seated for hours, I was nice to come in the restaurant with a reserved table for two with my fiance name on it, hehe.. The restaurant has a pub-y, home-y touch with splash of German touch everuwhere. There were a few German(I presumed) guests in the restaurant. You see, this restaurant is also a hotel that most Germans would prefer to stay when they visit Iloilo. All girls in the resto were given rose-shaped chocolates by the beautiful owner which was very nice of her.

J ordered a Hungarian Sausage and I ordered a Schnitzel. But our eager adventurous tummies got pretty moody and the eagerness turned into irritation   because we have been waiting for our orders for more than 1 hour, seriously... We arrived at around 7: 20 PM and by 8:45 PM,  we were still, impatiently, for our food. J already asked the waitresses for our order 3 times. In fairness, though, to the resto, maybe they haven't anticipated they will be having a full night. Trying our best not to allow this involuntary-hunger strike to ruin our night, J joked that maybe they only got one cook and the cook also does the washing of the dishes that is why it is taking so long. He was also a good sport for not blaming me for picking the resto, he said, It is beyond my control. It's not my fault ah.. Awww, how sweet! Hehe...

When our food FINALLY arrived, we ate like starving kids. How was the food? I guess I was too hungry to fill my aching stomach with food, I couldn't really tell if it was good or bad... J wanted to order more rice or another viand but he was too scared (haha!) to order because we might wait again for another 1 hour... Noo! But he did order 1 extra rice which was fast, thank God. We also had a Spezi, a famous German drink which is actually a mix of soda/softdrinks with lemon.

Spezi

Spicy Hungarian sausage
Schinitzel (Breaded Pork with Mushroom Sauce)
J also brought a nice surpris: A chocolate cake from Coffeebreak which was really yummy. We love chocolate cakes a lot!!! hehe....

When we "tried" to get our bill and to get our change, it also took soooo long. Though I don't hold it against them because they might be overwhelmed by this flow of customers and besides, we still manage to enjoy the night. Will we eat here again? Maybe not on a Valentines Day, hehe... Oh my sweet funny Valentines....

JANUARY WEDDING: CARL & GAYLE

Friday, February 17, 2012

One Saturday morning of January, my fiance, me and my friend Mar headed to the city of smiles, Bacolod City via roro using our trusty car that me & my fiance lovingly calls Jaiho, to attend a classmate and friend of mine and Mar in med school: Gayle and her fiance, now her hubby Carl. Gayle was also very instrumental in my lovestory with J. Gayle and J are acquaintances through each others' work and it is in Gayle's facebook, my fiance found me.. again, hehe...

Gayle and Carl is the epitome of a strong relationship. They have withstand all tests, (name it, they got it) to destroy their bond but they came out stronger and sweeter than ever. Their love for each other inspire me to never give up on any challenges that my come my way in my own relationship. You know if it is indeed meant to be, it will be..And yes, they are really meant for each other. Their relationship reminds me of a quote by Tao Tzu, that says, "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength; While loving someone deeply gives you courage."

Since we are also planning our own wedding, we picked on tips and details of the wedding of our friend for inspirations.

OUR LITTLE SECRET

Monday, February 13, 2012

Because it's Valentines day tomorrow and I promised a Part 2 on my boyfie's sweet surprise for me over romantic dinner the night before my birthday.Well, here it is, hehe, though I presumed you would have guessed by now what was my boyfie's big surprise which I attempted to keep as a secret for quite some time.... And your guesses are right! Yes! My boyfriend proposed to me over dinner with trembling hands, a few happy tears (mostly from me, hehe) and a beautiful white-gold diamond ring. It was such a magical and special night for us. Good thing, we were the only customers dining in the garden area that night and we were given the chance to relish the moment by our twosome with no loud noises or crying children from the other tables , hehe

Showing off the bling

I decided to post this because I was inspired by Patty Laurel who also recently got engaged too. Me and ehem... my fiance perfectly understand her emotions and the glow and excitement of being newly engaged.. Basta super light happy feeling na you wanna keep on smiling lang... We feel that simple joy of being an engaged couple that strengthens our bond and we couldn't help but become more sweet with each other... Now, that months have passed after the proposal, we are right now in our planning stage and we are having lots of fun! We also have attended a wedding last January in Bacolod and will be attending another one later this month so we have lots of wedding inspirations to help us with our planning. I will post entries of our friends' weddings soon.

To know more about our lovestory, you can stay tuned at my friend's blog who is based in the United States called Great (Un)expectations. Her blog shares love stories of couples of how they met or how their love story began which her two favorites questions. She asked me to share our story, hehe. Or if you have your own story to share, send your meet-cute tale to eyebeamstwisting@gmail.com and your entries will be posted in her blog. She also has another blog, Alien Turf that documents her experiences as a runner (or anti-runner as she would call herself) as well as her other funny and inspiring thoughts & anecdotes.

Do visit my friend's two cool blogs by clicking links: Great (Un)expectations & Alien Turf... Enjoy reading guys! Advance Happy Valentines, everyone!

PIE SURPRISE AND MANY MORE SURPRISES

Sunday, February 12, 2012

This weekend, my boyfie and I went to Oton to do some errands and on our way back to the city, we decided to stop by this little restaurant in Arevalo we been meaning try for quite some time: PIE SURPRISE. You see, we tried some of the foods of Pie Surprise when they catered some snacks in one of our hospital didactics. I didn't eat my share during the didactics but brought it with me after work to share it with my boyfie. We love it! We asked around where we can find Pie Surprise and promised ourselves that we will visit this restaurant soon.

image from the web
We were really famished from our errands, we skipped on the pies and ordered these:

Lasagna P69
My boyfie ordered this one. He fed me a lot of spoonful too, hehe. It was surprisingly good. They are not called Pie Surprise for nothing because they  do have that element of surprise, hehe... The sauce of the lasagna was rich and flavorful. I could really taste the beef-y yummy goodness.

Hawaiian Burger P69
Since I am a burger girl, this is what I ordered. I love pineapples on my burger. The patty was thick and tasty. I like their sauce in the burger. I don't need to add more ketchup in it. Along with the pineapple, there is also tomatoes and caramelized onion. Ohhh yum!

 Chicken & Mushroom Calzone P48
We divided this equally, hehe. I like the creamy white sauce in it. You know they didn't scrimp on the filling unlike some calzone where there are more bread and air than what's inside.

We were so satisfied with our snacks. We are stomach-friendly full without that gagging & ache-in-the-tummy kind-of full. We are definitely making another trip to Arevalo sometime soon.... ♥

INSPIRATIONAL SUNDAY: CLEANING INSIDE OUT

Monday, February 6, 2012

It decided to blog every Sundays about some realizations, inspirations and musings of mine.... I thought of injecting my unsolicited advice to those willing to listen, hehe...

This week, I got a lot of time on my hands so I get to actually clean my room, really clean it. It's my February project, to redecorate my teeny-weeny room. For the past three years with me being busy in my hospital training work , I would clean my room by just arranging my room making it appear clean and organized. While cleaning my room the other day, I got into the nitty-gritty. I went crawling down my bed to remove all the junk that accumulated. You see, I might have made it appear clean but I neglect to dust, sweep and fix the little nooks & corners. I saw that under my bed, ants started to create their little home and that my treasured letters & memorabilia I store in a box were destroyed by termites. I almost cried! I love those letters....

I realized something that this is a lesson learned. This could apply this to ourselves as a person. We tend to appear "okay" or "organized" or anything that would be "sociably-appealing." But if we bank on what looks good in the surface, appearing strong, confident and pretty but not working on what is inside: the accumulation of negativity, low self-esteem and hate, etc., we will be left to clean up a much bigger mess. We need to do an overhaul, to completely clean ourselves from the inside out. We should take the time to "sharpen the saw" by taking time for meditation, time with God and doing our examination of conscience at night... Because in doing so we won't need to deal with ant hills inside our hearts and destroyed letters of our soul....

BONDING WITH MY FRIEND SINCE GRADE 1 AT MARIDEL'S

I like to think that I am good at keeping friends. I have long-term friendships. And up to now, my closest friend is still my best friend in Grade 1, Cheryl. She is a doctor too. I remember that we would call each other and talk for hours on the phone. And to think we were just in Grade 1, God knows what kind of conversations we would have that would last for hours.... I could still remember though, her number: It's 30306, hehe, ancient.... Even until now, we still would talk about anything and everything for hours over the phone.

But due to our busy lives, we haven't been doing a lot of our usual chatting. She had been working for awhile in his husband's hometown in Mindanao and she has recently given birth to a beautiful baby girl. She already got three lovely angels.. ( I got none... Uhmmm... U think I better catch up? hehe). But now she is back in the city. Weeee!

So after my resident graduation, we met up at this new  pastry shop that another good friend from high school, my pretty big sis, Kathy Escutin-Espanola recommended. It's called Maridels. It is in a tiny shop in Plazuela. I have been in the area for several times but I have never seen that shop. It is actually near the restaurant Ponsyon where we usually dine in. Maybe it is because the exteriors of Maridel''s somehow matches the one of Ponsyon which is why I never noticed this new place.

Maridel's might be a small place but it is filled with so many sweet promises. They were too many cakes to choose from. They also have a lot of ice cream cakes. The interiors might not be that aazing due to the space issue but they have little interior details that would catch your attention, like their big silver mirror, their wooden clock or their chandelier.

I ordered two cakes for myself haha.... Cheryl just bought chamomile tea. But I did asked the another one to-go for my boyfriend because apparently, the greedy little me couldn't finish the two, hehe. I ordered the ice cream cakes: a frozen lemon meringue and turtle pie. It was sooo yummy! It reminds me a lot of the cake shop in Bacolod that I really like: Calea.  I can't wait to bring my sweet-tooth boyfriend here...

Turtle Ice Cream Pie

Frozen Lemon Meringue

Cheryl and I chatted about the usual: everything and anything. But our chat fest was cut short because I still have some business-woman duties to attend.. Hay! We will definitely have  a part 2 of this... and part 3... 4....5... and a lot more.... of our sessions. Shout out to Kathy Escutin Espanola... This is such a great call.... I love Maridel's hehe.... Can't wait to come back...

GOODBYE , ILOILO MISSION HOSPITAL

Friday, February 3, 2012

I have now completed my 3 years of training in the Department of Family & Community Medicine. Wow! I am now a Family Physician. And I will be leaving Iloilo Mission Hospital, my home for the last 3 years. I had a bitter-sweet emotions swirling inside of me....

So last February 1, 2012 was our graduation day along with other departments, Internal Medicine, OB-GYNE and Surgery. I delivered my message from the graduates towards the end of the program.

Here is my speech:

Good afternoon Dr. Pedregosa, Dr. Jalbuena, all the consultants present today, fellow graduates, and guests…

When I started training here a little more than 3 years ago, I would usually get lost at the labyrinth-like hallways of the hospital. Though at times, I still get confused where to turn right when I am suppose to turn left, but in a way, this labyrinth had been my home, our home for the last 3 years. So how do you say goodbye to place that you call your home, a place that has taken a great part in moulding who we are today? Yes, it seems just like yesterday that we were just pre-residents, I guess time flies when you are having fun. And I don’t say that sarcastically. I guess what I’m saying is that this hospital has been really a home for us because here we have found an adopted family & true friends. It helps if your working environment is a place where amidst all the toxicity you have friends that you can laugh, joke and bond with, making your work load lighter. Yes, it does make a difference. We, Family Med residents, do get our share of toxic duties, and some who would fill in our shoes even for a day would say, “Huo, budlay man gle inyu nga ubra nuh?”, though sometimes we try our best to make it look easy by camouflaging it with a twirly skirt or a pink lipstick or in the case of our boys, a well-matched outfit & well-combed hair. Iloilo Mission Hospital is a place where we grow as a doctor and as a person. We have made some mistakes along the way but we came out victorious because we could use it to make us even better doctors. We too have our triumphs, big & small and this hospital is very attentive & generous in recognizing that. It is nice to see a streamer with your name on it posted in front of the hospital. And we should appreciate things like that being done for us. This is the place where we hone our skills as a doctor, improved our patient & doctor rapport and test our abilities to face challenges head on. If the walls of this hospital could talk, it would have been blabbering right now with stories, funny & the not-so-funny. It was during my stay here in this hospital where I have had my heart broken & the walls again could attest to that but it was also in this place where I manage to find love again. This is a place where we experienced our ups & downs, an interesting rollercoaster ride. So thank you Iloilo Mission Hospital for treating us like a family & not like a transient border ni kuya.

Thank you to our dynamic hospital administrator, Dr. Pedregosa. You make the job as a hospital administrator look effortless but we know that for a fact, you have a lot on your hands. And seeing how you handle everything is quite refreshing and admirable. If we want to be leaders, we have You to look up to. And on top of your many many obligations, you manage not lose your enthusiasm & sense of humor and you still have enough energy to run 3-4 laps around Sport Complex. I can’t even ran half of the circle without being breathless

To our chairman & training officer, Dr. Jec and Dr. Bullo, Dr. Alerta and all of the FM consultants, thank very much. You just don’t know how grateful we are to have you as our mentors. It is a nice feeling when you know that your consultants is on your side and sometimes behind us to give us a slight shove when we needed it especially when we get too complacent. You always have new innovative ideas to share, to challenge us and are always there to support & encourage to aim high & never to settle on mediocrity.

To Dr. Jalbuena, Doc Rems, thank you for being there for us. As well the rest of the community of IMH, you did an amazing job. We salute you!

To all the parents of my fellow graduates and my parents whom I wish were here right now but unfortunately have to fly back to Saudi Arabia last week, this success & milestone in our life is very much yours as our own because without your sacrifices, patience, encouragement and love, we would have never became doctors in the first place. So thank you forever & always.

To my fellow graduates, congratulations, we made it! Though we are leaving, we take along IMH with us because wherever we go or whatever path we chose, we carry the name of Iloilo Mission Hospital, so let us make our hospital proud. To God be the glory. Good day!

TIPS IN VIETNAM TRAVEL

Here is some tips if you will visit Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Vietnam anytime soon.

1. Get a hotel at District 1. There are a lot of three-star hotels in this area. It is near Ben Thanh Market. It is not that expensive, usually ranging from $35-50 with free breakfast. Most touristy spot are 'walk-able' in that area. Plus it is good if it is near the market where you can have your night shopping done at your convenience. We picked the Kelly Hotel which was already okay and pretty decent.

2. Look right and left before crossing. The city is dominated by motorcycles. They would zoom really fast and they come in large groups. They are the 'kings of the road of Vietnam'. So careful, careful.....

3. Brush up on your mathematics. The conversion of Vietnamese dong to pesos or dollars can get tricky. By the time, you have your pesos or dollars exchanged you are a millionare... So double check your money when you give it to a vendor or in paying, you might get confused with all the zeros.

4. Taxis. When we arrived in the airport in Vietnam, a taxi driver tried to hustle us into getting him as a driver for a ridiculous price. So good thing I was reading the Smile Magazine of Cebu Pacific, they advised to utilized the Mai Linh, Vinssun or Saigon Tourist Taxis.

5. Unlike restaurants in the Philippines where we have a tissue on the table, in Vietnam, they provide you with packed wet tissue. But before ripping that packed thinking it's free. Some restaurants does charge if you use it. But don't worry, it is not that expensive.

6. Wear light, cool clothes like shorts and skirts. Use a comfortable shoes. Wear sunblock. It could get pretty hot there especially if you will do a lot of walking.

Tank Top: Valley Girl, Australia; Skirt: People are People; Sandals: Grendha; Accessories: given by my mom

Blouse: bought from a co-resident at a rummage sale; Shorts: July; Bag: Marc Jacob
Sandals: Grendha
Tube dress: Kashmar; Shoes: Grendha; Bag: Marc Jacob
7. Learn to haggle. In the night market, you can pull down the price from 100,000 to 40, 000. Just don't be too pushy. Just be firm and friendly and you will get a good bargain.

8. Try their Vietnamese iced coffee...

9. Review your history... In order to understand what you will see in the museums and in Chu Chi Tunnel better to relearn about the Vietnam War.

10. Some basic phrases like: Hello - Chao (jow)
Thank you - Cam On  (gam uhhn)

Hope that helps.... Email me at littlemisshoneyblog@gmail.com if you have anymore questions...  Chao Tambiet!

FOOD TRIPPIN' IN VIETNAM

Ok, it seems like I failed to mention about the Vietnamese foods we tried in my previous blogs about Vietnam. Well, it is because I intend to write a whole blog entry about it. You see, my sis and I had a discussion of how would you say that your trip had been successful? Some would say if they had a lot of shopping spree & got a lot of neat stuff from the trip. Some would say if they were able to gather some new knowledge of the culture and the country or city they visited. Some would say that they got time to relax.... Mine? A bit of the reason # 2 and also if I  get to try new & yummy cuisine of the new place I'm traveling... Yes, I am certified true-blue foodie...

So would I say that my Vietnam trip was a success? Maybe not at first...

QUAN AN NGON

There are two Quan An Ngon in the city. There is the one in Pasteur Street and another one in Nam Ky Khoi Nghia near the Reunification Palace. We chose the latter branch. The place looks promising. It was packed and there were a lot of foreigners there. It was set in this old atmospheric French villas. We sat outside near the humidifier. It was hard communicating with the waiter and we have to point on the foods we wanted. We were famished from the whole day of walking and we badly want good food.

Then the food arrived. We got to have our first taste of Vietnamese food and it left our stomachs crumbling even more. This place was well reviewed. But why?! Maybe we just picked the wrong foods, I don't know. Vietnamese, we noted, loves leafy vegetables unfortunately, we love meat too much and their food has a certain smell that we still haven't gotten used to. We rather feasted our eyes on watching this pretty skinny Vietnamese woman eating a lot but ordered A LOT of food. She ate with so much gusto we were so entertained. How does she managed to stay svelte? But then again, she eats mostly veggies... Hmmm.. So inspiring...

But after that dinner, we made a conclusion. We should eat a lot during breakfast where there are bacon, sausages and fried rice during the rest of our stay in Vietnam....

THU THAO RESTAURANT

During our tour in Tay Ninh to go the Cao Dai Temple & Cuchi Tunnel, for lunch after visiting the temple, our tour guide brought us to this restaurant. It looks like an big old house that was converted into a restaurant or maybe it was the the other way around. It seems to be the only restaurant nearby because I haven't seen any other restaurant when we passed. The lunch was included in the tour. It was already a set meal consisting of soup, crispy noodles, springrolls, chicken, fried rice and watermelon. We just have to pay for our drinks. We braced ourselves for a yet another frustrating meal but you know what, we were surprised! We weren't frustrated after all but quite the opposite. We loved it too much, we stayed long in the restaurant, chatting and enjoying the foods....  Vietnamese food has won me over right then and there.

Reminds me of the Chowking Crispy Noodles but better

PHO 2000

My sis and I wanted to try this because this was the restaurant that Bill Clinton visited. This can be found near the Ben Thanh Market. Also nearby was Pho 24. My sis asked me to choose between the two. Pho 24 look better, aesthetically-wise, than Pho 2000. Pho 2000's interior isn't that amazing. It looks just like an old diner. But we did want to try why in all the restaurant in Vietnam, Bill Clinton chose this so we wanted to see what is all about. And yes, Bill, indeed, knows good pho, hehe.... For a little bit of academic discoure, pho is a Vietnamese rice noodles usually served with beef or chicken and this is a very popular Vietnamese dish.

I am not a fan of soup but this seafood pho is REALLY REALLY good... Good choice, Pa!

This my bro's & sis' pork meal, yummy too. I ordered spring rolls with rice (no pic). It was also very good... So happy with our meal, hehe...

STREET FOODS

I am often joked by my family & close friends of my love for street foods. And guess what we found some in Vietnam.

We got curious and saw this guy cooking and mixing stuff in this rice paper in sidewalk near Notre Dame Cathedral.

He mixed some small dried shrimps, some herbs, some sauce, cracked a quail egg and cooked it in charcoal and folded it. I couldn't resist, I bought one. It was yum! Like a crunchy egg "torta".

We also saw this guy selling a folded leaves on a stick. We said we will buy one. He cooked the folded leaves on charcoal. There seem to be ground beef inside the leaves. Then he placed the leaves with the beef into a hard bread and placed some sauce into it... Actually, the taste isn't so bad but I just couldn't take the smell.

HAI LAU FOOD COURT

I saved the best for last. This is our favorite restaurant in Vietnam. We ate dinner there twice. It wasn't anything fancy. It is actually near the Night Market in Ben Thanh. It is just being set up at night and is actually in the sidewalks. But the place is packed all the time and so many foreigners go there. They have a lot of fresh seafoods and good variety of dishes. We can't help but gush how good the foods are there.

Add caption
This is pork. We wrapped it in a leafy vegetable which we took a cue from the pretty skinny girl we saw in Quan An Ngon and we dip it in the sweet and spicy sauce.
Yangchow Rice

Shrimps on coconut

Waitresses are the one who personally remove  the shells of the shrimps and
placed it into the flavored coconut water...

Morning Glory! Yummy veggies, really....

I have been a fan of Vietnamese iced coffee. In most of the restos we go to in Vietnam, I usually order this.. It is so good! Coffee with some condensed milk and lots of crushed ice. It usually comes with a long spoon to help you mix it and crush the ice. We weren't able to take a pic of the fresh yummy red snapper we ordered. I was hands down our favorite. So juicy.... Now I'm getting hungry...

So I can say that my Vietnam vacation was a success because it gave me a gastronomic adventure worth remembering... How about you? How would you determine if you had a successful vacay?
