COUGARS IN TELEVISION

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Before, May-December relationships would conjure raise eyebrows and soft whispers from other people. But thanks to Demi Moore, relationships between an older women with younger hot men are applauded rather than jeered upon. (Too bad, her marriage with Ashton Kutcher didn't last, though.) I admire this kind of freedom to love. I believe that love defies age, race, social or educational background, height or  physical appearance. Love is love, no ifs or buts. If I would quote Divine Lee, she said, "Love is about trust and respect, and never about a mathematical equation. Being with someone is about finding your happiness. Age can never put a bracket on happiness." (taken from http://the-dialogue.tumblr.com/). I totally agree with that. Hence this trend of hot sexy older woman (dating hot sexy younger man) birthed the term, "Cougar." Rawwwr! According to our friend Wikipedia, Cougar is defined as slang term referring to a woman who dates younger men. Typically, Cougars are women at the age of 40+ and above dating 20-something men while women who is 30-40 something dating 20-something men are called Pumas. Though, years before Demi made dating a younger man so hip, we have Anne Brancroft playing Mrs. Robinson opposite a young Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate" who played it oh-so-well. In real-life, besides Demi and Ashton, we got Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon, John Corbett & Bo Derek,Hugh Jackman & wife Deborra-Lee Furness and many more. But what I am going to highlight are the cougars on television! They are everywhere! They rock! I will start off with the woman who paved the way to all telly cougars (as well as real-life cougars, one of which is Demi Moore): Miss Samantha Jones

SEX & THE CITY'S SAMANTHA JONES

taken from cafleurebon.com
Miss Jones has lot the sass and the spunk to date (and groom) a young up-and-coming sexy actor. She exudes that confidence that nobody dare questions her decisions. She doesn't try to look young for her partner, she stays just as she is-- Samantha. She with her Jerrod Smith, they both look good together. She may not be my favorite Sex & the City character but I admire her confidence. She stays true to her identity and loves herself that I would have no doubt men, young & old would fall easily for her. She doesn't depend on a man (which most men seek in a woman). She broke up with Jerrod Smith because she doesn't want to lose her identity. Tough Woman!

BROTHERS & SISTERS' SARAH WALKER

taken from popwatch.ew.com

This is a dream come true for any women. Sarah Walker goes to France to find herself and she found, unexpectedly, a young sexy French man. Wow! Not only that, she went home to America, and this French fella followed her to America and even married her... Oh lala Cougar! Purrrfect Catch! She may not be my favorite Cougar and I couldn't really see why Mr. French Dude is hopelessly in love with her, but that is a Cougar for you... Their magical powers, hehe... I think her clothes are a bit to frumpy to seduced a hot dude, though. But she can be really sweet and caring and a jungle animal in a certain part of the house (read: bedroom).

LIPSTICK JUNGLE'S NICO REILLY

taken from fanpop.com

Nico Reilly is my favorite Cougar. She is a no-nonsense bitch-boss from hell who got a buff boy-toy on the side. Yes, I know it is quite unforgivable of her for cheating on her husband but then again, unknowingly at first, her husband has been cheating on her (and with a baby from another woman) on the way beside her back for years. When her cheating hubby died, she hooked up again with the handsome and young Kirby and forged a relationship. She is a tough chick and her confidence is very sexy. She wears classy simple office suits that accentuates her (I assumed) Pilates-defined body without trying to be young. But she still comes off ultra-va-vavoom.

COUGAR TOWN'S JULES COBB

taken from tvline.com

don't really follow this series but I did catch a few episodes. Jules Cobb is a recently divorced single mother trying to date again. It exemplifies the life of a 40 year-old divorcee looking for love and since the choices of men to date out there can be endless, some of the preys are younger men. I didn't like that Jules came out more like a desperate older woman facing the challenging dating world, but they probably exaggerate it for comedic effect since it is anyway a comedy show. She later hook up with Grayson, an owner of a pub, though I have no idea if Grayson is younger than Jules since I am not following the show.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES' GABRIELLE SOLIS

taken from bumpshack.com

Another popular cougar in television. Eva Longaria's Gabrielle in Desperate Housewives. Since she is bored at home with her husband always at work, what should a beautiful suburban wife to do? Have an illicit affair with their hunky underage gardener! Which , of course, lead to the demise of her marriage. So lessons to bored housewives everywhere: stop playing with fire or cute gardeners for that matter. Though with a gardener like that, it takes a lot of will-power to look a way and not jump into his arms, hehe.  And interestingly enough, Eva also in real life married (and eventually divorced) to Tony Parker who is 7-years her junior. Though she may be categorized as a Puma rather than a Cougar.

Do you know any more cougars in the telly? Who are favorite? Do share... I would love to know....

GUEST BLOGGER: CHIN-CHIN VITO TELLS US HER SUMMER ESSENTIALS

Monday, April 23, 2012

Beauty and charm are the first things that came into my mind when I met our guest blogger. She remind me of those chic cute French chick... She is adorable! Much to my delight, I learned that she is a blogger too. A beauty blogger! I enjoy reading her reviews on different cosmetics and her make-up tutorial. I love cosmetics too but I am not an expert on the art of putting make-up especially eye-makeup... I am hopeless! Good thing, I have her blog to rescue me from a makeup crime. So welcome beauty blogger, Chin Chin Vito as she introduces to us her blog and tells us her summer essentials....

***************************

1. Who is "The Kikay Chronicles"  and what is your blog about?

I call my blog The Kikay Chronicles. It contains product reviews, make up looks, beauty tips and tricks that I got from a variety of sources.

2. When and how did you start blogging?

I actually started in 2004, I was a high school junior and blogging was just starting to go mainstream.

3. What is your catch phrase for your blog?

Make up, beauty, skin care and other chorvas. Other chorvas because beauty doesn't always mean the superficial stuff, I also want to do some "alternative" beauty posts that encourage and empower in the future

4. Who is/are your favorite blogger/s?

All the blogs I'm following! Hehe

My Favorite Summer Essentials

It's summertime once again, that dreaded season when the sun decides to plague us with its constant and burning presence (sorry, sun Nazi here). With  humidity and heat levels reaching an all-time high (an infernal 42 C in Cagayan Valley just last week!), I decided that it's just fitting that I tweak my beauty routine a bit.

Considerations should be:

SPF, SPF, SPF!
Choose only lightweight, water-based, sheer-finish products
Waterproof/sweat-proof make up
Beauty philosophy: natural, dewy, and hydrated

The Extras:

1. Sunglasses (Php 250, Cebu Pacific)-they actually sell these on the plane, they're cute and cheap and I couldn't resist. Protect your lovely ojos from sun damage (especially the delicate undereye area) with a pair of oversized shades

2. Small scarf (H&M)- Keep hair away from your face with a scarf. Choose one in a fun print, and use as a headband or tie around your ponytail.

3. Umbrella (SM Department Store)- tote around a small, folding umbrella. Aside from wearing sunblock, it's also a lot better to have physical protection against the sun

Body:

4. Banana Boat Sport Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50 (Php242, Watsons)- I've been using this for a year now and I love it! I always walk around in the sun and so far my skin hasn't darkened that much at all. It's also super lightweight and has a mild scent, unlike the heavy sunblocks of yesteryears that leave you smelling like you bathed in lana (coconut oil). Use daily all over the body for maximum sun protection

Face:

5. Nivea Shine–Free Collagen Protect Face Fluid SPF 30 (Watsons, Php 240)- use a separate sunscreen for your face. Choose one that's moisturizing and lightweight.

6. Maybelline Clear Smooth Aqua Gel Foundation (Department Stores, Php 350)- I don't wear foundation everyday, but if I had to, I would choose this. It's water-based, so it's lightweight and goes on sheer. Gives light to medium coverage. You won't feel like you're wearing foundation at all.

7. Victoria's Secret Airbrush FX Face Primer with SPF 20-again, not a daily essential but great for summer weather. Avoid make up meltdowns caused by heat and humidity with a face primer that's light and has SPF.

8.  Myra E's Vitasmooth Shine-Free Face Powder with SPF 15 (Watsons, Php 130)- my current weapon against the oilies

Cheeks/Lips:

I don't enjoying wearing too much products on my face when it's so hot out, so I prefer to put focus only on the cheeks or lips. The flushed (for fair-skinned girls) and bronzed(for dark-skinned girls) looks are so easy to do and could easily make you look healthy and glowing.

9. Nichido Powder Blush in Tomato and Cool Rum (Php 88, department stores)- love these! Inexpensive, nice packaging, and very pigmented. Be sure to blend out with a blush brush though, to avoid getting clown cheeks.

10. Allue Hypoallergenic Cheek Gel (HBC, Php 85) - formulated for pre-teens, hypoallergenic and has a mild, sweet scent. It's not very pigmented, but it's buildable- which I think is great to prevent blush mishaps. Can also be worn on the lips to give you that just-bitten look. Try this when you're going out for a swim or to the gym to give a subtle, flushed look.

11. HBC Mousse Blush in Pink (HBC)- another blush again which I love because it's sweat-proof, great for exercising or whatever. Very pigmented-a little goes a long way. Warm up the product with your fingers first before patting onto cheeks, as it's a bit difficult to blend because it doesn't contain silicons.

12.Etude House Dear Darling Lip and Cheek Tint in #3 (Etude House, Php 198)- my HG lip and cheek tint! I bring this with me everyday and everywhere I go. Nicely pigmented,  smells good, doesn't taste bad, and is easy to spread. I love that it leaves a light stain even after I eat.

13. Human Nature Peppermint Lipbalm (Human Nature, Php 64)- get a tinge of coolness, even if it's only on the lips, with this refreshing lipbalm from Human Nature.

How about you, did you switch up your summer routine already? What are your summer favorites? :)

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

4.22.12. Happy Earth Day!

Let us keep our Mother Earth happy! We must in our own little way protect and preserve her.

www.outlook.noaa.gov

Here are some of my simple suggestions in helping our Mother Earth:

1. Use recyclable grocery bags. There are a lot of cute grocery bags to choose from.

2. If you are going somewhere near, leave your car at home. Rather walk, ride a bike or jeep.

3. Don't throw your garbage on the streets and rivers.

4. Segregate your garbage. Teach your family this.

5. Plant a tree.

6. Turn off the electrical device, fans, lights, etc and remove it from their socket if not used.

7. Support organic or environmental-friendly products like Human Nature, Messy Bessy etc.

8. Close faucets properly.

9. Hold garage sale and sell your old clothes and stuff.

10. Learn to make recycle paper. It's easy!

What are your suggestions to preserve our beautiful earth? Do share!

I will leave you with a video of a poet who visualized the earth in 2070 if we continue to abuse it. Let us not allow this to happen.

INSPIRATIONAL SUNDAY: THE THING CALLED GOOD KARMA

Happy Sunday everyone!

Do you believe in karma? It recently got me thinking. Is everything that is happening in our lives a mere coincidence or a result of our past actions? Do we go through the motions of our life without deep contemplation on the effect of our simple actions to our future and the future of our future children and the world?

Apparently, what we do today has a corresponding effect to our lives and our future. That is karma for you my friend. The cause & effect of the universe. What we sow, we reap. So if we sow hatred, we get hatred. And if we sow love, we reap love. Simple as that. But better said than done. We all have greater tendencies to the easy response of anger, resentment, envy and negative thoughts, after all we are human. But we didn't realize that by catering to these negativities we are opening ourselves to these, we are even attracting it more into our lives leaving us very unhappy and miserable in our lives. Did you ever experience that when you harbor such deep hatred or anger on someone somehow an aspect of your life came crumbling down? You either attract thieves, more enemies, or financial woes. And you would just say, "When it rain, it pours." We didn't realize that we were indirectly responsible for what is going on with our life. And we would wonder (or envy) some people who seem to have everything: good looks, good looking & sweet boyfriend (or girlfriend), and successful career. We say, "Gosh, life isn't fair". But we didn't know that maybe he/she knows the secret of good karma. I just realized this recently that we should be watchful of what we think, we do and we feel should and gear it towards positivity to attract goodness in our life. Yes, the golden rule should be the best motto in our lives. Do unto others what you would have them do unto to you. In order to attract good karma, we must love more, forgive more, help others prosper, show patience and other good virtues because it will be returned tenfold or more. But if we give off anger, impatience, hatred, jealousy, those are the same things that will be attracted in our lives or any negative things.

It is nice to be aware of this fact because it is not too late for you and me to change our karma in our lives. I know it can be tough to teach our mind and body to things we are not accustomed to and we just allow ourselves to go on auto-pilot. But we just have only one life. We owe it to ourselves to make it a beautiful one.

Here are books that inspired me in this thing called good karma (& law of attraction):

The Secret by Rhonda Bryne; The Power of your Subconcious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy

Grab both copies! I assure you, you won't regret it. Good vibes and positivity!

SUMMER READS

Friday, April 20, 2012

In my younger years, I would devour books like Sweet Dreams, Sweet Valley High, Nancy Drew Mysteries and Babysitters Club. But as I grew older, I would stir away from these light-reading books and opt for something deeper and ehem..ehem.. more mature like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jeremy Eugenides, Haruki Murakami, etc. Naks! Pa-feeling mature and intellectual lang, hehe.

But just recently that has changed until I met Sophie Kinsella. I have mentioned in my summer lists that my summer reads are all Sophie Kinsella books. I adore her! Sophie Kinsella is a London-based bestselling author who wrote "Confessions of a Shopaholic" that later was made into a blockbuster film starring the beautiful Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. Kinsella writes chicklits (chick literature) always with a funny, spunky, usually clumsy heroine who  seem to manage to get into awkward mishaps much to the readers amusement. When I read Kinsella's book, it is a romcom (romantic comedy) coming alive in pages. It never fails to entertain me. I laugh out loud when I read it, and people around me would think I gone crazy. I also cry at the end at sweet moments  and some twists in the story. I even got some of my friends and family hooked on Kinsella's novels.

Here so far are my Sophie Kinsella collection and the synopsis of their stories taken from http://www.sophiekinsella.co.uk.

REMEMBER ME

Lexi wakes up in a hospital bed after a car accident, thinking it’s 2004 and she’s a twenty-five-year old with crooked teeth and a disastrous love life. But, to her disbelief, she learns it’s actually 2007 – she’s twenty-eight, her teeth are straight, she’s the boss of her department – and she’s married! To a good-looking millionaire! How on earth did she land the dream life??!

She can’t believe her luck – especially when she sees her stunning new home. She’s sure she’ll have a fantastic marriage once she gets to know her husband again. He’s drawn up a ‘manual of our marriage’, which should help.

But as she learns more about her new self, chinks start to appear in the perfect life. All her old colleagues hate her. A rival is after her job. Then a dishevelled, sexy guy turns up… and lands a new bombshell.

What the **** happened to her? Will she ever remember? And what will happen if she does?

TWENTIES GIRL

Lara has always had an overactive imagination. Now she wonders if she is losing her mind. Normal twenty-something girls just don’t get visited by ghosts! But inexplicably, the spirit of Lara’s great aunt Sadie – in the form of a bold, demanding Charleston-dancing girl – has appeared to make one last request: Lara must track down a missing necklace Sadie simply can’t rest without.

Lara’s got enough problems of her own. Her start-up company is floundering, her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, and she’s just been dumped by the love of her life.

But as Lara spends time with Sadie, life becomes more glamorous and their treasure hunt turns into something intriguing and romantic. Could Sadie’s ghost be the answer to Lara’s problems and can two girls from different times end up learning something special from each other?

I GOT YOUR NUMBER

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier.  She is about to marry the ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her 'happy ever after' begins to fall apart.  Not only has she lost her engagement ring but in the panic that followed, she has now lost her phone. As she paces shakily round the hotel foyer she spots an abandoned phone in a bin. Finders keepers!  Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except the phone's owner, businessman Sam Roxton doesn't agree.  He wants his phone back anddoesn't appreciate Poppy reading all his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other's lives through emails and text messages.  As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls andhiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents... she soon realises that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

So are you a Sohie Kinsella fan too? What is your favorite book she wrote? I would love to hear from you. And if you are not, do grab one of her novels, I am sure you will be a fan in no time... Ciao bookworms!

TOO COOL FOR SUMMER

Thursday, April 19, 2012

What is the best way to cool your scorching summer? I say,  by having a large bowl of Halo-Halo... Ohlala!

For my foreigner friends who read my blog, Halo-Halo is a popular Filipino dessert that is made of shaved ice and evaporated milk to which are various ingredients are mixed (Tagalog word, 'halo' means mix) like sugar palm fruit (kaong)  boiled kidney beans, jackfruit (langkâ), gulaman, nata de coco, cereal flakes, macapuno and sweet potato (kamote). Some also has additional yummy surprises like leche flan, ube or ice cream. Sinful! hehe.... Then you --- halo-halo-- mix-mix all the wonderful ingredients. Cool your senses this summer with a halo-halo... My fave summer dessert!

MOVIE REVIEW: A GIRL WITH A DRAGON TATTOO

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

I have been eyeing this book, THE GIRL WITH A DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larson in National Bookstore for quite some time. You could sense a book is good just by the look of it. Yes, as a matter-of-fact, some books can be judged by its cover. But unfortunately, I never got to read any of Stieg Larson's Millennium Trilogy: The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played Fire or The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest.

Image from the web

But due to its literary success, it is without question that there will be movie versions of the book. In 2009, a movie version was done in Sweden played by Michael Nyqvist playing Michael Blomkvist, while Noomi Rapace played the protagonist Lisbeth Salander. And after which, a Hollywood remake was done  with Daniel Crag as  the disgraced journalist Michael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as the spunky computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Image from the web

I watched the Hollywood version and I say, "This is such a kick-ass movie! I love it." Mysteries, forensic psychology and strong female figures are of great interests to me and all of which are address in this film. You get drawn in by the mystery that Blomkvist was employed to solve (that later he got help from computer hacker/brilliant research assistant Salander).

Rooney Mara was a revelation in the movie. She definitely deserves the Oscar nomination for her role in this movie. Several actresses were considered for this role namely, Carrey Mulligan and Scarlett Johanssen. But in the end Rooney Mara was picked for this role. But who is Rooney Mara? What were her other body of works? You will be surprised to know that she is the same girl who played Erica Albright, the girl who dumbed Mark Zuckenburg in the movie, The Social Network! What a big difference, right?!

(Screen grabs from The Girl with a dragon tattoo)

Most of the critics praised Rooney Mara for her fabulous acting and total commitment to the role. Variety described her performance as' hypnotic'. I couldn't agree more. She totally kicked seriously butt in the movie. How would you ever know that from playing a preppy college girl role, she can pull out a bisexual, angst-driven, smart and moody feminist. The producers of the film made the right call for packing her. Women with a lot of piercings, a constant sulking facial expression and a hard-core boyish demeanor before would pass off as weird to some people but now are portrayed in a different light as cool strong chicks.

I commend the director David Fincher for making a dark entertaining film version of the celebrated book. But this movie should come in a big bold warning. It is not one for the kids. They should stay away from this one. It has  a lot of nudity, violence, sex scenes, gore and brutality. As for me, I couldn't wait to see the next movie installment. Go go girl power, Lisbeth Salander!

MY SUMMER ESSENTIALS 2012

Monday, April 16, 2012

The sun is definitely heating Summer 2012. So I have to pull out my summer essentials....

1- Grendha thongs: I have to keep my stilettos and boots in their boxes because this summer it is all about comfortable cool footwear. Perfect for the beach, road trips, malling, to be paired with shorts, sundresses or bikinis.

2 - Lipgloss: Less color, more shine - that is the motto for your summer lips. Ditch the matte dark colored lipsticks and have any generic (preferably hypoallergenic and with spf, though) lipgloss for your lippies. This one is a Clinique Lipgloss in Cosmic Pink, I borrowed (permanently, hehe) from my niece....

3- Carried Away Shimmer Mist : This will cool you this summer. Spritz on this allover your body and you will be smelling citrus-y summer fresh. My fiance love it when I wear this one.He said I should wear this all year-round. But this mist is just a summer fling for me, hehe... Rub it allover your exposed body too for a sparkling skin. You will definitely shimmer under the summer sun.

4- Nivea Sun Deep-Tanning Oil Spray 6 Low- Sunscreen is a must for summer. Unfortunately for me, when I go under the sun, when I darkened I turned into an unflattering grey. So to remedy that, I just don't put on the regular sunblock but I put on a tanning spray/lotion to make my skin look more golden. I envy our morena sisters for their year-round golden tan. I wish I was blessed with a gorgeous complexion like that.

5- Careline Mineral Eyeshadow (Party Time & Cheer Dance/ P99 each): Summer does mean less make up. You need to put on less or no foundation because it will just melt off in the heat of the sun. But it doesn't mean a colorless face. Summer is also a perfect time to get bold with playful eye colors. Bright colors like greens, yellow and aqua blues. Summer is about being playful. So go crazy with your eye colors.

6-  8-way Bikini (P750): It is time to hit the beach. No need to carry a lot of bikini when you can get different designs in one bikini. This bikini can't be worn in 8 different ways. How great is that! To order: Go to your facebook and add as a friend: Colorful Bazaar and order. As simple as that.

7- Blistex Liptone: We also need to protect our lips from the sun. Lather on this lipbalm that has spf 15 and has a perfect touch of color similar to your lips

That is it for my summer essentials for 2012... What's yours?
