SUMMER READS

Friday, April 20, 2012

In my younger years, I would devour books like Sweet Dreams, Sweet Valley High, Nancy Drew Mysteries and Babysitters Club. But as I grew older, I would stir away from these light-reading books and opt for something deeper and ehem..ehem.. more mature like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jeremy Eugenides, Haruki Murakami, etc. Naks! Pa-feeling mature and intellectual lang, hehe.

But just recently that has changed until I met Sophie Kinsella. I have mentioned in my summer lists that my summer reads are all Sophie Kinsella books. I adore her! Sophie Kinsella is a London-based bestselling author who wrote "Confessions of a Shopaholic" that later was made into a blockbuster film starring the beautiful Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. Kinsella writes chicklits (chick literature) always with a funny, spunky, usually clumsy heroine who  seem to manage to get into awkward mishaps much to the readers amusement. When I read Kinsella's book, it is a romcom (romantic comedy) coming alive in pages. It never fails to entertain me. I laugh out loud when I read it, and people around me would think I gone crazy. I also cry at the end at sweet moments  and some twists in the story. I even got some of my friends and family hooked on Kinsella's novels.

Here so far are my Sophie Kinsella collection and the synopsis of their stories taken from http://www.sophiekinsella.co.uk.

REMEMBER ME

Lexi wakes up in a hospital bed after a car accident, thinking it’s 2004 and she’s a twenty-five-year old with crooked teeth and a disastrous love life. But, to her disbelief, she learns it’s actually 2007 – she’s twenty-eight, her teeth are straight, she’s the boss of her department – and she’s married! To a good-looking millionaire! How on earth did she land the dream life??!

She can’t believe her luck – especially when she sees her stunning new home. She’s sure she’ll have a fantastic marriage once she gets to know her husband again. He’s drawn up a ‘manual of our marriage’, which should help.

But as she learns more about her new self, chinks start to appear in the perfect life. All her old colleagues hate her. A rival is after her job. Then a dishevelled, sexy guy turns up… and lands a new bombshell.

What the **** happened to her? Will she ever remember? And what will happen if she does?

TWENTIES GIRL

Lara has always had an overactive imagination. Now she wonders if she is losing her mind. Normal twenty-something girls just don’t get visited by ghosts! But inexplicably, the spirit of Lara’s great aunt Sadie – in the form of a bold, demanding Charleston-dancing girl – has appeared to make one last request: Lara must track down a missing necklace Sadie simply can’t rest without.

Lara’s got enough problems of her own. Her start-up company is floundering, her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, and she’s just been dumped by the love of her life.

But as Lara spends time with Sadie, life becomes more glamorous and their treasure hunt turns into something intriguing and romantic. Could Sadie’s ghost be the answer to Lara’s problems and can two girls from different times end up learning something special from each other?

I GOT YOUR NUMBER

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier.  She is about to marry the ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her 'happy ever after' begins to fall apart.  Not only has she lost her engagement ring but in the panic that followed, she has now lost her phone. As she paces shakily round the hotel foyer she spots an abandoned phone in a bin. Finders keepers!  Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except the phone's owner, businessman Sam Roxton doesn't agree.  He wants his phone back anddoesn't appreciate Poppy reading all his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other's lives through emails and text messages.  As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls andhiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents... she soon realises that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

So are you a Sohie Kinsella fan too? What is your favorite book she wrote? I would love to hear from you. And if you are not, do grab one of her novels, I am sure you will be a fan in no time... Ciao bookworms!
