Here in Iloilo, there is two popular batchoy restaurant: Ted's Old Timer Batchoy and Deco's Original LaPaz Batchoy. I decided to give my tastebuds and food critic in me a challenge to see which of these two "batchoyan" would reign as the 'King of Batchoy'.
Let us start with Ted's OldTimer Batchoy
The choices are based on the ingredients of the soup:
Extra Super (P68) with pork, liver and other pork innards
Super Special (P65) with pork and liver
Special (P60) with pork only
I ordered the Extra Super with 2 pandesal (Filipino bread)
They didn't scrimp on the ingredients of batchoy. They placed lots of garlic which is great. I like the miki/round noodles because it wasn't soggy. It just tasted a bit bland that I need to put soy sauce and pepper into it. I love their pandesal. It wasn't hard like some pandesal. I love dipping it into the soup. Like!
Next stop, Deco's Original Lapaz Batchoy
The choices in Deco's are based on the bowl sizes:
Extra (P70) Large
Super (P65) Medium
Special (P59) Small
I ordered the Special since I couldn't finish a big bowl of soup usually. I also ordered some puto (a steamed rice minicake ).
They put lots of chicharon (pork cracklings) and I am one happy girl. I love the yummy salty taste of the soup. They perfected the broth much to my delight. But if you add soy sauce to your soup, it could get too salty. The puto was very hard and has no taste. So I just finished one puto, couldn't manage to eat another more.
Verdict: The King of Batchoy crown goes to........
Deco's Original Lapaz Batchoy!
I will definitely recommend these to my friends who hasn't taste and would like a taste of a good Lapaz Batchoy.... I wouldn't recommend them getting the puto though. Pandesal is the perfect partner to Batchoy. Leave the puto with dinuguan.... Happy Eating! Kaon ta!

i've tried both and in my opinion they're almost equal. i tried deco's in boracay in two separate visits and ted's here in manila and cavite.
ReplyDeleteI guess it could also depend on the branch... So far, in all of the branches here, I like the Deco's taste than Teds... But maybe I should try the ones' in manila and cavite. Thanks so much!
DeleteI tried the ones in San Pedro in Pavia and also taste great!! Anyhow thanks for the info ..DEco's more professionally dressed for a batchoy ,,gave it 5 star!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Causpar. You are right, Deco's more professionally dressed for a batchoy. But this mini-contest does come with a disclaimer that it is entirely based on my tastebuds considering what taste good for some, may not taste good for others. I guess that mean we got the same taste in foods, hehe... Cheers!
DeleteSpeaking of tastebuds... Based on my tastebuds, I also prefer Deco's over Ted's. I don't really mind if only Ted's is available in the area I happen to be when the craving of batchoy hits me. But if I have to recommend one to my friends, I'd take them to Deco's.
DeleteI guess Ted's is more popular in term of being marketed as the Original Lapaz Batchoy but I prefer the take of Deco's still. But you are right, if Ted's is the only available on around, I don't mind having it either. I did post this question to my Facebook page which is better Ted's or Deco's, surprisingly, most people say Ted's...
