I have lots of friends working in Roxas City, a city two hours away from Iloilo City. I requested them to bring me some pasalubong from Roxas. They brought me this: a box filled of yummy assorted mini-pies from Spanggo Cafe and Pasalubong Center.
Spanggo is short for Spanish-Ilonggo. They offer tasty homemade pies, chorizo, tapa, longganiza and other Spanish frozen foods. I was also told that the Cafe has lot of crafts made in Roxas as well as other delicacies that is perfect to bring home for pasalubong.
They have boxes of the whole homemade pies. Check out panaylakbay's blog feature on Spanggo. My friends opted to get me the box of assorted pies: buko, pineapple and apple. They also have another brown bag of chicken pie for me. I was in pie heaven! Spanggo's bestselling pie is said to be the Buko Pie.
Here are my pies. I apologized if the apple pie picture got a bit smushed because of my clumsy handling of the box.
I shared some of the pies to another friend of mine. We tried first the bestselling buko pie. They were right, their buko pie is definitely worth raving. It is filled with lots of coconut meat and it wasn't too sweet. The crust is very thin and not heavy on the stomach. Next up was the pineapple pie. It has a mix of pineapple and buko in it. Personally, this one is my favorite. Its synergistic mixture of flavors of pineapple & coconut are enough to make my tastebuds happy . The apple pie is recommended for the sweet tooth. It melts in your mouth and the apples are not cut into big chunks like most pies but rather in pies that is just right. The chicken pie is best eaten hot. My friend said it reminds him of a chicken casserole, while I reminds me of a chicken ala king. It is quite filling. But veggie-haters will not opt to get this one because it contains some bit of veggie bite-pieces like carrots, etc.
The one box cost P350, containing 9 minipies (3 buko, 3 pineapple, 3 apple). These are bought per piece: Buko minipies - P30, Apple minipies- P35, Pineapple minipies- P30 and Chicken minipies- P35.
I hope they will open a branch in Iloilo City soon.
