BOOK RECOMMENDATION: GONE GIRL BY GILLIAN FLYNN

Sunday, May 5, 2013

Ok ok, this book came with a warning. It might have been a bad idea for a girl a weeks shy from her wedding to be reading this. But this is my own version of dare-devilness, so I read it anyway.

I have never heard of this book before. But there are certain books that at  first glance, it seem to beckon you with seductive whispers to take them home. And I allowed myself to be seduced so I bought it. Reading from the countless praises and reviews from credible critics, this book is a class act. According to critics, this book is much talked about in twitterville and other social networking media for its "awesome-ness". Financial Times said: 'Read it and stay single'. Oppps, isn't it a warning that I should have dropped this book but I keep turning the page instead.

It's a story of two young married couples and how a marriage slowly disintegrates. It is a tale with two sides in an addicting, page-turning and suspenseful narrative. There will be no spoilers for this book recommendation, don't worry. One thing though, I am not sure that I am happy with the ending. Gillian Flynn is a very talented writer. She knows how to spin, tangle and  untangle a plot. She tends to be overly "writer-y" though which shows her depth as a writer but she overly-dramatise a sentence with wordy literary techniques sometimes. But I still applaud her for this gem of a book. It is a worthy read.

The Mail on Sunday said, 'Gone Girl is a book you'll be begging other people to read just so you can discuss it with them'. So my fellow bookworms, read this book, pleeeeaaase! Let me know what you think of it.
