GLUTTONS AT MAKANSUTRA GLUTTONS BAY

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Last January 25, 2013, while Iloilo City was celebrating the Dinagyang festivities, three Ilonggos were having a 'dagyang' of their own. "Dagyang" loosely means merrymaking and exploring the city on foot. During Dinagyang festivities, the streets are crowded with food kiosks, henna tattoo stands, stalls selling all kinds of anything and big booming speakers with crazy loud music. Dinagyang is not only about charcoal-painted dancers dancing in unison to drums, it also means walking around aimlessly in the City of Love, enjoying some food we would find in foodfest and just enjoying how the city comes alive on those special few days.

And that is just what the three of us did. Missing out from the Dingayang festivities, we did walk aimlessly (the googlemap was playing a joke on us that day) looking for a certain restaurant to have our dinner. After 45minutes  of walking in circles with weary feet and rumbling belly, we did find the restaurant we were looking for, however, it was just too 'high-end' for us. We were looking for more casual atmosphere for diner. But we passed by this area that reminds us of the foodfest in Iloilo during Dinagyang. We serendipitously found Makansutra Gluttons Bay.

The place was packed and the atmosphere was fun and lively. Wohoo! After walking around the streets in Singapore and eating in the foodfest-like place, we did feel like we had our 'dagyang of our own.

We ordered a feast for our gluttonous bellies.

Soon Lee Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

This is  a favorite of my IT friend here in Singapore and when she introduced it to me, it has soon found favor in my ever-accomodating tastebuds. My two 'daygang' companions noted that it is kind-of reminds them of our very own bam-i. It has different types of noodles mixed together with shrimps and squid in it. On the side is a chilli paste since Singaporeans are addicted to chilli, something that I am slowly adapting.

Soon Lee Fried Omelette

Egg omelette with oysters and herbs. My friends got fascinated with this dish. However, I still like the fried omelette in Blk 84 in Bedok Hawker Center.

Alhambra Padang Satay

I love these! I can eat them all in one sitting. This is  a mix of chicken, beef and mutton. I like dipping it in their peanut sauce. The peanut doesn't taste sweet as you would think it would take like peanut butter. It just taste, well, peanut-y and I don't mind it at all. But I don't care too much for its glutinous rice side dish.

Gerry's Grill Lechon Kawali

Yes, it is the Gerry's Grill of the Philippines! And I am happy to say that the queues in Gerry's Grill is longer than other stalls. This dish is sinfully--- so sinfully good. I was dreaming of its crunchy skin even until the next two days.

Gerry's Grill Pork Sisig

Been a long time since I tried pork sisig and I was very happy. I did wish though that there is mayonnaise on top of the sisig just like how I want my sisig.

The Gluttons

We had  a long day that day. We were tired, happy and we had fun. We celebrated Dingayang our own way in Singapore. We are sorry we missed it. Belated Happy Dinagyang, Iloilo!

  1. I enjoy your sense of humor, Honeylette! Not only this post, but also the new McDonald's burger post made me laugh. "Gluttons Bay" - a safe harbor for gluttons LOL! It does look like a nice place to indulge in some gluttony, though, pretty cool. I've never been to Singapore; glad to hear you are adjusting well and enjoying, although I am sure you miss Philippines. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the great work. All the best and Ingat!

    1. Your comment made my day. Hahaha! Because my sister always told me that I was never good at telling jokes. But I can be funny by default, she said. The worst profession for me would be a stand-up comedian because I will totally suck at it. Hahaha! So thanks for your comment, it means to me that you enjoy my sense of humor. Hope you visit Singapore soon. I miss the people that I love in the Philippines but I enjoy the adventure of living in different places. Don't know maybe soon it will be somewhere else again...
