RECONCILIATION WITH HONGKONG

Thursday, December 2, 2010

When I was 16 years old, I declared war with HongKong. My family and I had a trip to HongKong which got hellish as far as I am concerned. First, there was  a date mix up, we change our trip date and I guess the hotel reservation was not rebooked. We wanted loooong hours at the HongKong airport for our pick up. But no one came. After hours of waiting in vain and a frustrating language barrier, we learned our hotel reservation got cancelled and we have no place to stay. Fortunately, we were directed to this new hotel near the airport. It was a good hotel, a bit expensive and far from the city. Second, on our trip to Ocean Park, I was tasked to hold on to our tickets. Guess what? I misplaced the tickets, got reprimanded, only to find out that I had it in my bag all a long. Third, after a ride in the Galleon, I had the most terrible migraine ever, that I cried myself sleep from all the pain (no exaggeration!). Fourth, the city was just waaaay to busy for my style. So many people everywhere, busy busy busy. Then again I noticed how great the street fashion in Hong Kong but since my declaration of war, I turned a blind eye.

But after years of war, I decided to step into the soils of my enemy. Here below are the reasons that made me reconsider.

1. MONGKOK NIGHT MARKET

A place where they are all the affordable goodies we hoard from little trinkets to bags and shoes. I was too tempted to buy a lot of stuff but my wallet and one mini trolley warned me against overspending in HongKong and excess baggage expenses.

2. OCEAN PARK

Yes, I used to cursed the Galleon. But I had a change of heart and fell in love with Ocean Park. The rides were awesome especially The Abyss Turbo Drop that drop you 20 feet above ground level, giving your stomach  a major sommersault. Though their roller coaster did not parallel the one in Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna. I love the Dolphin show too. So cute! And the big Aquarium with colorful fishes, stingrays and sharks. Plus the cable cars. Its a fun fun place to be for childrens from 2 years old  to 92 years old. But still I'm not riding in no Galleon....

3. HONGKONG STREET FASHION

Ahhhhh! I love the HongKong fashion! I could just sit by the corner and admire the chic, adventurous, serendipitously mix-and-match fashion of the HongKong women. They accessorize so well and they wear it with a carefree attitude, like they just pull out whatever in their closet and put it on. But the result is like watching these petite porcelain models with the streets of HongKong as their runway....  流 行 的 式 样 [liúxíng de shìyàng]!

4. GATEWAY TO MACAU

Two hours away from HongKong is Macau, the Land of Dreams. If I made peace with HongKong but Macau is another thing. After a day in Macau, all I can say is..... I fell in love. I went back to HongKong at 12 in the midnight with stars in my eyes.......
