It came as a shock to us when we learned about Pope Benedict's resignation. My Catholic friends and I didn't know that popes can resign. But I am sure this decision of our Holy Father is not a decision he did on a whim. Rather, he have thought about it deeply, prayed for it incessantly and asked the Holy Spirit for guidance for several weeks or even months. Let us all offer a silent prayer for Pope Benedict as well the next pope that will step into his shoes...
I will forever cherish the memories of our close encounter with Pope Benedict together with my fellow pilgrims during the World Youth Day in Australia 2008. We gatecrashed PBVI's special audience with him and he was just inches away from us. The experience was surreal.

It's an experience we will never forget... |
WYD Sydney 2008 was one of my fond memories. Pope Benedict was leader in this wonderful rock-concert/devotion/gathering to our Lord by bringing all Catholics together to praise God... He is an inspiration to the youth. As Monsignor Andrew Faley of the Catholic Bishops Conference said, "(He is) a man who appreciated the humanity of everyone he met". I hope people would respect this resignation as a sign of humility in his part by allowing another servant of God to shepherd us to Holy Christianity.
