KOREAN DINNER AND COLLEGE LIFE

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Last week, I took my lil brother and niece for some nice Korean dinner. Korean cuisine is an acquired taste. I was first introduced to Korean cuisine by my sister. Frankly, I didn't enjoy it that much. I thought it tasted weird and too expensive if you ask me. But after several tries, this time, my other brother took us out for some samgyapsal, we were sooo hooked. Thanks Noot! Our tastebuds kept craving for it. Once, we even had a garage sale for some Korean dindin, hahaha!

I took my lil bro and niece to Seoulia and talk about college life. My lil bro is in his 2nd year of college while my niece is entering college this June.

We ordered our usual: SAMGYAPSAL.

Yes, the order is per head. It comes with a stew, either seafood stew, kimchi stew or duenjang stew. We picked the Duenjang Stew which consists of soybeans.

This is how our Samgyapsal meal looks like:

Samgyupsal consist mainly of a thick fatty part of the pork belly, a dipping sauce like a chili paste, soybean paste, sesame oil & salt, and accompaniments like lettuce, rice, raw garlic, aged kimchi, mushroom & a lot more.

Duenjang Stew
This is how we eat our Samgyupsal: (I skipped the rice.)

Cook the Pork.
Before the customers do the cooking in their respective table but now, the waiters does it in the back of the resto.

Ready to eat

Lay the lettuce flat on the plate

Dip the pork on the chili paste or whatever dips you prefer

Put the pork on the lettuce and any of the accompaniments you want to mix it with

Roll the lettuce and eat.... 아주 맛있었어요.a-ju ma-si-sseo-sseo-yo!

While enjoying our Korean dindin, I talked to my lil bro and niece the importance of college and why we shouldn't take it for granted. It is too easy to  slack off in college: very flexible schedules, cool or otherwise lazy teachers, a new group of friends that can possible teach you to skip classes, lots of cute girls or boys that can distract you from your studies etc etc... But I told them that they should always look at the bigger picture. If  they allow this to hinder them, they will be in the losing end. But if they use their head wisely, college is a goldmine and could be starting point to your ladder of success. Though college life can have its temptations, it has even more opportunities for the positives. Learn as much as you can. Choose your friends wisely. Pick a good organization that you can join, something that they will enjoy or hone their skills. Entering college is also a new chapter in your life so you can strive to be even better that you are in high school or be the person you have always wanted to be. Never be afraid to ask. The family will always be there for you. They told me about their apprehensions and excitement about college. I told them that they should motivate themselves. When they sleep at night and waking up in the morning, they should envision who and what they want to be in the future. Stick reminders and inspiration quotes on their celphone screen or their wall. Never depend on other people to motivate u, YOU should motivate yourself, it should come from within you. Lastly, pray for guidance from God. Besides, #School-is-Cool!

I MISS KOREAN FOODS! Even though I learned a bit of Korean cooking from a Korean cook -- I still prefer authentic Korean dishes prepared by someone other than me, lol!
