Have you
ever been on a holiday that was supposed to be relaxing, but in the end, just
made you feel stressed? Whether it’s lost luggage, your schedule not going
according to plan, or something going wrong with your cheap car hire, just remember – your holiday
should be a fun time…so take a few deep breaths and listen up.
We’ve put
together some tips for making the most of your holiday, including the best ways
to enjoy it even when things aren’t going as you’d planned:
Start planning early. Sometimes, the planning can be
nearly as fun as the trip. Decide upon your destination early. Not only will
this help you save on airfare and hotels, but you’ll also be able to bask in
the idea of your upcoming holiday.
Think about what you really want. Some of the world’s most well known destinations like Rome, Paris, and
Berlin may not be for you. Instead, think about your holiday in terms of what
you want to do – not what you should do. If you prefer adventure, plan a
thrill-seeking vacation. If you’d rather relax and enjoy nature, find a beach
destination.
Create a “buffer.” One of the most stressful parts about a holiday
is thinking about going back to work afterward. If you have the opportunity,
give yourself a day off before you leave (to pack and ensure you have
everything ready) and a day off when you return (to catch up on sleep and
everyday tasks).
Delegate…and plan. Before you leave, talk with your co-workers and
determine if there are any of your day-to-day tasks they might be able to
handle. If checking into the office for an hour each day will help you relax,
plan to do so.
Aim for relaxation. Time away from work and the stresses
of everyday life should be a necessity in everyone’s life. When you’re
considering your destination options, look at places where you know you’ll have
an opportunity to explore – and relax in between. If you’re traveling with
children, consider finding a day care half-day camp for a couple days so you
and your spouse can travel on your own.
Accept change. Before embarking on your holiday, know in your
mind that things may not always go as planned – and that’s okay. Even through
inconveniences like lost baggage, try to make the most of it and focus on the
time you have with your loved ones.
It’s okay to look natural. Your holiday is a time to relax and
not worry about looking or dressing fancy. Save yourself time (and suitcase
space) by choosing casual clothing that you can wear for more than one day.
Plus, it’s not likely you’ll see anyone you encounter ever again.
Accept your travel partner for their positive
qualities. Whether
you’re traveling with your spouse, best friend, or acquaintance, you’ll be
spending a lot of time with them so it’s best to look at their positive
qualities. If your travel partner has an easy-going attitude, try your best to
go with the flow. If your spouse likes to plan, appreciate that about them. It
will make your holiday run a lot smoother.
Alternate activities: Don’t overwhelm yourself with too
many activities in one day. Instead, try to mix the active parts of your
holiday with relaxation. The activity will make you feel good, while the
relaxation will lower your stress hormones.
Choose quality over quantity. Instead of packing everything into a
few days, spend time before you depart looking at a guidebook. Make a list of
the top places in a city you want to visit and make it a priority to make it to
those. Make sure your last stop is a good one – researchers have shown that
it’s one of the events that will stay most in your memory.
Before you
embark on your next holiday, consider these tips for an experience that we hope
you’ll deeply enjoy.
